When was the last time you did something for yourself?
After having published, both here and on other socials, the two articles about overcoming the limits and on the possibility to change our life, I received many comments that made me think and write this post.
Many people would like to change their lives, many people are dissatisfied with their current situation, but few take a decision and, even less, find the courage to make that change.
Because of the lack of strength.
Because of the lack of the right energy, positive and proactive.
Because, at the end, of the lack of the will to really change.
So, if we think about it, it is a contradiction: we would like to change and yet we don’t want to do it?
The problem is that we live with the autopilot on, perhaps for too long, and instead of driving ourselves along the path of our life, we let ourselves be carried away.
We live in routine and boredom, meaningless days become months and then years in which, slowly, we let ourselves go.
From my personal experiences, but also according to many others with whom I exchanged opinions about it, we end up living in a situation of apathy: the routine kills us, makes us drowsy; the work we do, and maybe we hate, takes away our energy; we end up to believe we are wasting our life but, at the same time, we do not have the strength to do anything about it.
Here, then, is why small things are so important.
I’m talking about things that may seem silly, insignificant, but are instead the first essential step to return to recovering energy and strength, but also courage and security, which can lead us to a real change.
We can’t expect to start mountaineering directly from Everest, right? Or learn how to swim by crossing the Channel?
Thinking about this two extreme examples, I literally lit up realising an important truth: even my depression didn’t start from one day to another, but it was a slow, gradual and inexorable descent towards those depths.
Because day after day I lost strength.
Because day after day I accumulated small doses of negative and sterile energy.
Because little by little I lost the desire to do something, anything, that made me feel good.
Until I lost the will to live.
I remember that I stopped writing, little by little, and immediately afterwards I also lost the desire and the inspiration to dedicate myself to photography: two of the things I loved most, were gradually and deliberately removed from my life.
Then I stopped playing sports, I stopped looking for another job, I stopped reading, I stopped smiling: I spent my days with a resigned autopilot on.
I stopped doing all the things that made me feel good, starting with the big ones to get to the smallest.
“Die slowly…” Do you remember that poetry, right?
That’s why, then, the little things become so important: because through all those little gestures, those little actions that make us feel good, we manage to maintain our strength, increase our positive energy and increase our will to live and to change!
Never forget these little things, always find time for yourself and do what makes you feel good.
